In many cases, this flash adorned the walls of tattoo shops or was shown in travel books to eager prospective clients. Flash was a necessity when serving large numbers of clients in rapid repetition, as was the case when a navy ship docked with a crew eager to get "stewed, screwed and tattooed!" There was often thematic recurrence with a variety of designs so the client could choose individually even when in the company of a like-minded group. The quality and quantity of the flash on the walls, in addition to the application by the artist, would strongly affect a shop's reputation and chance for success.
