Hong Kong Traditional Tattoo is a collaborative photobook by Taiwanese tattoo artist Jimmy Shy and street photographer Yu Chang.

Inspired by Jimmy’s deep admiration for Hong Kong tattoo pioneer Pinky Yun, the two traveled throughout Hong Kong tracing the legacy of one of the city’s most influential tattoo artists. Guided by Pinky’s enduring influence, they sought out individuals who still carry tattoos connected to this tradition, documenting the imagery, personal histories, and living memories preserved on their bodies. The result is a living archive of Pinky Yun’s remarkable legacy.

Combining photography, interviews, and historical research, Hong Kong Traditional Tattoo explores the postwar sailor tattoo culture that once flourished in Hong Kong. More than a study of tattooing, it is a visual and historical journey through the city, its people, and a tradition that continues to endure.

Jimmy Shy has tattooed for over fifteen years and has devoted recent years to researching and preserving the history of Hong Kong traditional tattooing and Asian sailor tattoo culture, with a particular focus on documenting the artistic legacy of Pinky Yun.

Working primarily with film photography since 2009, Yu Chang is the author of Somnambulate Taipei (2020) and Side Effects of City (2021). His work is known for its honest and compassionate portrayal of people living on the margins of urban society, revealing both their resilience and humanity.

Published by Hardy Marks Publications, the imprint founded in 1982 by legendary American tattoo artist Ed Hardy, this volume continues a longstanding commitment to documenting tattoo history and culture. In 1985, Hardy Marks introduced Pinky Yun to an international audience through its landmark magazine Tattoo Time, recognizing his lasting influence on Asian sailor tattoo culture.
